Where is Retrodorm located?

Retrodorm is located in the Luolavuori district. The address of the accommodation is Virvoituksentie 3 A, B or H, 20720 Turku. The office is located in the B-wing.

How many tenants live in each floor and how are the common rooms shared?

In the A- and B-wings, each floor houses 10-17 tenants. In the H-building, there are only 5 persons per floor. The kitchen, showers, laundry room and the common room are shared between the tenants of each floor in the B-wing. The A-wing is similar to the B-wing except the all the tenants in the A-wing share the same laundy room. In the H-building, the floor's tenants share the kitchen, the common room and the shower, but the laundry room is shared with all the tenants like in A-wing.

I wish to live on a female-only floor. Is this possible?

Please let us know immediately, preferably already in your application, if you wish to be located on to a girls-only floor! The 2nd floor of the H-building is for girls only, and may house up to 5 girls who wish to stay in a female-only dorm. However, if we do not receive any requests for a girls-only floor, then the 2nd floor of the H-building will be a mixed-gender floor. This is why it's so important that you let us know as early as possible, if you wish to be located on a girls-only floor.

Application process

Who can apply?

We usually reserve rooms for exchange students only. If there are any left-over rooms, we may also accept foreign researchers or interns for university positions. However, all the rooms normally get filled by exchange students for the autumn term. In the spring, we receive fewer applications.

Could you make me a contract for a shorter stay?

No, we make our lease contracts for a fixed period: for instance in the autumn, the date the lease contract expires is 31.12. If you want to leave before this you will still be charged the rent of the rest of the year. In case of not arriving at all or leaving shortly after the arrival the deposit payment can be used to cover the expenses of reserving the room.

When do I know if I get an offer from Retrodom or not?

Application process always takes time due to the large amount of students applying every semester. We also need to wait for the universities to complete their application period for exchanges. We will always send letter of acceptance or rejection for everyone who applied, so please wait patiently for the application process to end. We will contact you as soon as possible!


How much is the rent?

The monthly rent is 300 €. The only exception is August. If you have selected in your application to start your rental period on 15.8., you will only have to pay for the half of the month.

Please note: Your actual arrival date to Retrodorm is not the starting day of your rental period.

For example, you have selected to start your rental period on 1.8. and arrive on 17.8., you will have to pay for the full month. Also in case you leave early in December, for example on 14.12., you will have to pay for the full month.

Could I pay in cash?

No, unfortunately paying in cash is not possible in Retrodorm's office, because your payments are going to the City of Turku’s billing address and not directly to Retrodorm. Neither it is possible to pay by using a credit card.

Could I pay more than one month’s rent at a time?

You may pay your rent either monthly, or all at once. In case you want to pay all of your rents at once, you will have to inform us via email as soon as possible after receiving the acceptance letter.

What happens if I do not pay my rent?

We understand that sometimes the rent is delayed because the tenant has had trouble opening up a bank account, or has accidentally used a faulty reference number or an account number. If your payment does not show in our billing, we will send you a reminder note and request that you make the payment, and send us the receipt of the transaction immediately after. However, if you still neglect the reminder and refuse to pay the rent, we will notify your university. Please also note, that if a student does not settle his outstanding invoices, we will no longer accept any students from his home university as our tenants. So please keep in mind, that should you fail to pay your rent, you are also depriving other students from your home university the possibility to stay with us in the future.

What is included in the rent?

Water and electricity fees are included in the rent. Additionally, there is a wifi free of charge. There are no other regular payments to be made.


Could I have a room with a private toilet?

All rooms in Retrodorm have a private toilet, except for our 9 twin rooms which have a shared toilet (but you will only need to share it with the person you are staying with, usually a good friend or a partner).

Does Retrodorm have WiFi?

Yes, Retrodorm offers tenants a connection free of charge. You will get the WiFi details upon moving in.

Does a cleaner clean my room?

No, the cleaner only cleans the common rooms, such as the kitchen and the hallways, but you are responsible for cleaning your own room, also when moving out!

How do I get my key?

Note that the first possible day to arrive and collect the key is the first day of your rental period! This is also the first day your tutor can pick up the key for you.

You will need to inform us of your date and time of arrival as soon as possible. Retrodorm’s office's opening hours you can be read from the home page. If your arrival time is outside office hours, you will need to contact your tutor and arrange for them to book a time with the Retrodorm staff, for picking up your key in advance. This should be done via email at least one week before your day of arrival.

In other words, if we do not know when you are arriving, you do not get the key.

Can I change my room or the building where I’m living?

No, unfortunately we do not re-assign rooms, except under extreme circumstances (for instance if there’s a sudden, serious problem with the room that we can’t fix immediately, like water damage). If you have any wishes about the building, you need to let us know that before paying the deposit payment. If we haven't received any wishes, we reserve the right to make the room assignments.

What is the deposit payment?

The deposit payment is 300 €  and it must be paid before you arrive in Retrodorm. You will receive further instructions with the acceptance letter. The deposit payment can be used to amortization of a debt (such as unpaid rent, unpaid door opening, unpaid false fire alarms etc.) or for the repair/cleaning/lost furniture costs that are due to tenant’s actions or negligence. In case of not arriving at all, the deposit payment can be used to cover the expenses of reserving the room. The deposit will be refunded to the tenant's bank account (as the tenant's home country is in SEPA region and in cash as the home country is outside SEPA region) when the lease agreement has ended and the room has been inspected and the key given back to the landlord.
